About this space
Nestled high on the hill, this private, cozy mountain sanctuary offers breathtaking views of Lake Cuyamaca and majestic Stonewall Peak. Enter the door of our serene and peaceful zen home and feel your entire body relax in the calming space. The floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors open to a deck where you can enjoy a morning coffee, an evening glass of wine or a restorative yoga session. Maison Zen is ideal for a couple's getaway or an individual's "escape." Not suitable for children or infants.
The space
Located in a quiet neighborhood on North Peak, Maison Zen is a single story, contemporary home with captivating views of Lake Cuyamaca and beyond. The living room has high ceilings with Fleetwood floor-to-ceiling, multi-slide glass doors that open on to the view deck. An electric fireplace generates heat and adds to the ambiance of the room on a cool evening. Cuddle up on the couch in one of the soft blankets that are provided in a basket on the hearth. Above the fireplace is a 48" smart TV where guests may login to their favorite streaming services. Turn on the sound bar below the TV for enhanced audio. The window shades are raised and lowered electrically via remote control. The home is equipped with hi-speed mesh wi-fi.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a full size refrigerator, microwave, toaster, full size blender, electric water kettle, Green pans, popcorn popper, Magic Bullet blender, muffin tin and paper liners plus all the utensils needed for preparing a meal. There is a Keurig coffee maker (with caffeinated, decaf and mocha latte pods), coffee bean grinder and reusable pod if guests choose to bring their own coffee beans. For the tea drinkers, there is also an assortment of organic teas, with and without caffiene. Organic spices and extra virgin olive oil are also available. The ice cube trays in the freezer and the water in the Brita filter are filled with fresh water between guest visits.
The bedroom has high ceilings, a comfortable, queen size bed, an armoire for your clothing and a cozy corner for reading. The floor-to-celing sliding glass doors open on to the view deck. The shades in this room are also controlled via remote allowing you to open the shades and take in the morning views while still lying in bed. There are two sets of yoga mats, cushions and blocks in the armoire. Books for pleasure reading, a copy of Jerry Schad's hiking guide and hiking maps of the area are in the white, wall cabinet in the bedroom where a clock and a white noise generator sit on top.
The bathroom has a private toilet room, a shower with a Rain shower head and hand-held shower, a free-standing Chromatherapy tub with jets, a petrified vessel sink on a teak cabinet and plush robes for your comfort. Also provided are lavender epsom salts and bubble bath for a soothing soak in the tub and individual soaps, lotions, shampoos and conditioners.
There is a new, all-in-one washer/drier in the hall closet. It takes 3 to 4 hours to complete a load and the closet door must be propped ajar during use.
In the center of the view deck, there is a high table and chairs for enjoying a meal or beverage. On the east end of the deck are two lower chairs with cushions for relaxing and observing nature and the beauty of the area. An assortment of wildlife visits the birdbath below. We've seen deer, wild turkeys, Stellar's Jays and hummingbirds. Also in the area are woodpeckers, roadrunners, hawks, falcons, bald eagles (which live across the lake near Stonewall mine), squirrels and many other mountain critters. Below the deck are apple and peach trees on the west side of the walkway.
We've never actually seen a bobcat or mountain lion, but they are in the area and we've seen their paw prints in the snow. Be cautious if you decide to take a walk in the wee hours of the night/morning. Most Julian residents have never seen a mountain lion after 30 years of living in the area.
Guest access
The entire house and the property around it and below is for guest's use. The garage, out building (below and to the west) and the shed to the east are ours for storage and not accessible to guests. There is a parking space in front of the property where guests will park parallel to the street. There are reflectors and wood blocks for guidance. This space is within reach of the EV charging cable.
When stepping from the street onto the front deck next to the garage, there is one step down to the deck. We have provided a solar-powered light and two yellow stripes on the ground to make the step down more visible to help prevent stumbling in this area.
